The Foreign Language Department began its work in 1951. Today, it operates as the Foreign Language Center of the Faculty of Medicine (ÁOK), following several organizational transformations. Our unit provides education to nearly 1,000 Hungarian and 2,000 international students. In addition to ÁOK, we also offer courses for students of the Faculties of Dentistry (FOK), Pharmacy (GYTK), and Health Sciences (ETK).
Ten language teachers work at the institute, supported by numerous part-time lecturers. Our instructors are highly qualified professionals dedicated to supporting the development of our students. In our work, we place a strong emphasis on teaching medical and scientific language, ensuring that students have the opportunity to learn professional terminology during their studies.
Most of our English and Latin for Specific Purposes courses are compulsory electives, but we also offer students the chance to deepen their knowledge in German and French. Our curriculum includes a wide range of general and professional language elective courses. These elective courses cover diverse topics and are very popular among students.
Our goal is for students to confidently use the foreign language of their choice. We provide personalized attention and continuous support. During instruction, we also strive to make the most of e-learning technologies. We pay special attention to making our lessons interactive and results-oriented, thereby ensuring an engaging language learning experience.
We regularly offer preparatory courses for both general and professional (medical) language exams, and many of our students have successfully passed these exams. It is in all our interests to help students become conscious language learners and achieve the best possible results. International students come from various countries with different cultural backgrounds. For them, we offer courses in Hungarian and Latin. In addition to developing general language skills, we consider it important to support their integration. Language classes provide an opportunity not only for students but also for teachers to become more familiar with each other’s cultures.
We also place great emphasis on professional language, helping students to feel more confident during clinical practice.
Our center is located in the building of the International Education Coordination Center, where teaching takes place in modern, elegantly renovated classrooms equipped with a full range of internet-based technical support.
